Frequently Asked Questions

Can the HCGHS accept online payment for membership dues?

Yes! As of October 3, 2009 we accept major credit cards and PayPal when you complete your membership application. Payment by check is still available, but because of mail transit times and check clearances there may be a longer delay in activating your membership if paying by check.

For your convenience, credit card payments automatically renew at the end of your membership term, but you can always cancel renewal at any time.

I submitted payment for membership (PayPal, Credit Card, Check) but have not yet received an email invitation to log into the member website. Where is it?

After your membership dues have been received and processed you will receive an invitation to create a password and profile to access the member only section of our website at:

http://hudsoncountygenealogy.ning.com

Please note that the invitation email will come from the address
invitations@hudsoncountygenealogy.ning.com and may take up to 48 hours to arrive after we have received your payment. If you have a spam filter enabled on your email program please be sure to check your spam folder to ensure that the invitation did not get trapped there!

Once you have created a password and submitted your profile it may take a day or two for us to approve it (don't worry -- it's just a formality to ensure only HCGHS members can access the site!). After that you can use the web address listed above or click the link at the top of every page on the public web site that says
“Member Sign-in”

We have experienced problems with some Internet Service Providers not delivering the email invitation to join our member site (or having it get caught in junk mail filters). This seems to be most frequent with users of AOL.com but others as well. If you do not receive an invitation to join the member site within a week after your payment is received by the HCGHS please contact membership@HudsonCountyNJGenealogy.org to request a new invitation. We want to be sure you can utilize all the benefits of your membership as soon as possible!

How do I cancel my membership?

For cancellation information visit our Membership Cancellation page. Please note that no refunds are issued for canceled memberships, but you may continue to enjoy member benefits until your membership term expires.

Do you do lookups or research?

The Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society is not a research organization and therefore does not take requests for genealogy research or database lookups. However, many of our members are experienced or even professional researchers themselves and the environment we try to promote is one of openness and collaboration, so if you're looking for help, try attending one of our events, browse our collection of public databases or better yet, consider joining us and tap into our collective member expertise!

If you have a simple question other than above, you can open a ticket on our HCGHS Help Center. Because we do not have a staff, we cannot guarantee that someone will be able to answer your question, but we'll do our best and questions are saved in case they can be answered in the future.

Why are there non-genealogy ads on some pages?

In order to offer the best functionality for our visitors and members at a cost a non-profit organization can afford, some of the pages and features are supported by advertising. We don't receive money for the ads but accepting them allows the third parties that provide added functionality to continue to offer them for low or no cost. So if you see an ad mixed in with HCGHS content and it seems relevant to you, please do click through. Supporting the developers of our tools helps us too!

We also show a small amount of affiliate advertising from genealogy-related companies like Ancestry.com. If you are interested in these services please do click through. The Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society receives some payments from these affliate advertisers that help defray the costs of running the Society and providing programs.
