A Monumental Salute - Veterans Day 2011
Hudson County Monuments Pictorial Catalog
At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 the Allied Nations and Germany signed an ‘armistice’ ceasing the hostilities of the Great War, the war to end all wars. In November 1919, then President Woodrow Wilson signed a Proclamation declaring November 11th as the first commemoration of that occasion. Although not officially named a national holiday, many individual states continued to recognize November 11th as a day of reflection. In 1938 the U.S. Congress officially made November 11th a legal holiday, declaring “Armistice Day” as a day to honor all veterans of World War I. In 1954, following World War II and the Korean Conflict, Congress amended the name of the 1938 Act to “Veterans Day”, a day set aside to honor American veterans of all wars.
In this installment, we preview monuments dedicated by the towns of Hudson County to those who served in “The Great War."
