FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Hudson County Genealogical Society to Index Death Notices from The Hudson Observer
JUNE 28, 2008 JERSEY CITY, NJ. The Hudson County Genealogical Society has partnered with the Jersey City Free Public Library to index death notices found in The Hudson Observer. The Jersey City Free Public Library has the Observer on microfilm.
The newspaper began as The Observer and was published in Hoboken, NJ starting in 1904 to 1910. It became The Hudson Observer from 1911 to 1924; and then continued as The Jersey Observer until it was merged into The Jersey Journal in November 1951. Hoboken's most famous native son, Frank Sinatra, once worked at The Observer and had plans to become a sports writer.
The library will use the index to make searches for library patrons easier and HCGS members will be able to browse the index on the Society's Web site. The general public will have access to a surname index on the site. The library is asking especially for volunteers who have time to come to the library and make photocopy packets of the microfilmed newspaper pages so they can be passed out to volunteers working on the indexing.
