History Fair to Feature Film on Muskrat John, Witness to the Transformation of the Meadowlands

OCTOBER 4, 2010 - HUDSON COUNTY, NJ - Johnny Rohweder, a native of Jersey City, starting hunting and trapping muskrats in the Hackensack Meadowlands as a young teenager some seventy years ago. Warner Wada, a professor of photography at Ramapo College, tells his story in a fascinating documentary to be shown at “Come Home to History,” a history fair scheduled for Saturday, October 9, at the Hudson County Community College Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street, Jersey City.

Revolutionary War Battle of Paulus Hook Topic of Talk at History Fair October 9

SEPTEMBER 29, 2010 - HUDSON COUNTY, NJ - On August 19, 1779, Continental Army forces led by Major “Light Horse” Harry Lee (father of General Robert E. Lee of Civil War fame) raided the British fort at Paulus Hook. On Saturday, October 9, 2010, Tom Bragen, a member of The George Washington Commemorative Society of Jersey City, will relate the story at “Come Home to History,” an all-day history fair at the Hudson County Community College Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street, Jersey City. Bragen's presentation is scheduled for 2:45 pm.

Court House Murals Subject of History Fair Talk by Dr. Cynthia Sanford October 9

SEPTEMBER 27, 2010 - HUDSON COUNTY, NJ - “Fighting for Beauty: The Muralists and Restorers of the Court House” is a featured talk by Dr. Cynthia Sanford at “Come Home to History: Celebrating 350 Years of Hudson County Heritage,” a history fair on Saturday, October 9. The fair, from 10 am to 6 pm, will take place at the Hudson County Community College Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street, Jersey City. Dr. Sanford's talk, at 11 am, will cover, among other topics, murals by Francis Davis Millet and Howard Pyle that depict the early explorations and settlements of the Dutch and English in New York and New Jersey.

Mayor Hague's War on Radicals Is Feature of “Come Home to History” Fair October 9

SEPTEMBER 17, 2010 - HUDSON COUNTY, NJ - Frank Hague, mayor of Jersey City from 1917 to 1947--perhaps most widely remembered for his declaration “I am the law”--is the subject of a video by Bob Leach to be shown at “Come Home to History,” Saturday, October 9. “Invasion of the Reds: Mayor Hague's War on Radicals and Free Speech” will be shown at 3:45 pm. Leach, founder of the Jersey City Historical Project, will be present to introduce the video and answer questions.

Hudson County Genealogical Society Sponsors School Essay Contest

MARCH 22, 2010 - JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Hudson County Genealogical Society is sponsoring an essay contest for the public school children of Jersey City to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the founding on the Town of Bergen, the first permanent European settlement in New Jersey. In cooperation with the Jersey City Board of Education, the Jersey City Free Public Library, and New Jersey City University, the contest continues the tradition of similar events held for the 250th anniversary in 1910 and the 300th anniversary in 1960.
